Connecting With – What does this mean?

In marketing and communications we say our goal is to “connect with” people – customers, potential customers, the public, and special interest groups….

But “connecting to” and “connecting” are different; and to be successful we want to move from the first to the latter and open up the discussion.

“Connecting to” is a vertical relationship with a hierarchy built in. “Connecting” refers to a horizontal relationship where we allow person to person relationships to form and we are not in control. This scares a lot of businesses as they are no longer controlling what may happen next as our customers form their own tribe in which we are an just an equal or perhaps less then equal member.

Tons of good can come from letting go of the reins. We want to build loyalty and let a tribe form which can exponentially generate opportunity and open doors to genuine emotions, allowing change and impact to happen.

e-mail Marketers – You need to know this !! Canada’s Anti-Spam Law – in effect July 01, 2014

Posted by sdidcott on July 6, 2014
Posted in: Canada Anti-Spam Law, email marketing, Social Media. Tagged: Anti-Spam Law, Canada, implied consent, instant messaging, social-media. Leave a comment

This is very  important for all professionals, marketers, and businesses to know and understand.

If you use electronic channels to promote or market your organization, products or services, Canada’s New Anti-Spam Law will most likely affect you.

3 Questions from the Canadian Govt’s website asks :

“Do you use email, SMS, social media or instant messaging to send commercial or promotional information about your organization to customers, prospects and other important audiences?”

“Do you install software programs on people’s computers or mobile devices?”

“Do you carry out these activities in or from Canada?”

If your answer is “Yes” –  then you need to understand your obligations under this new law.

Here is some more information from the website:

“To send a commercial electronic message to an electronic address, you need to have the recipient’s consent, to identify yourself, to offer an unsubscribe mechanism and to be truthful.

  • Consent: You must have a form of valid consent.
How can I obtain express consent?
What’s the difference between express consent and implied consent?
  • Identification: Clearly identify yourself and your organization. You must include your mailing address. You must also include a phone number for accessing an agent or a voice messaging system, an email address, or a web address for you or the person on whose behalf you are sending the message.
  • Unsubscribe mechanism: Provide an unsubscribe mechanism that is functional for 60 days. See examples of acceptable unsubscribe mechanisms.
  • Truth in advertising: Your messages must not be false or misleading. They must not have false or misleading sender information, subject matter information, URLs and/or metadata.

To install a program on someone else’s computer or mobile device, you must have his/her express consent. Learn more about how to obtain consent in this case.

Note: {The Canadian Govt. Website  } provides plain language information about the law but is not a substitute for the law itself. You are strongly advised to review our information bulletins and seek your own legal advice regarding how to comply.provides plain language information about the law but is not a substitute for the law itself. You are strongly advised to review our information bulletins and seek your own legal advice regarding how to comply.”

For the most part if you have been using best practices for email marketing which is based on permission based marketing you will likely find that there is not too many things you need to change in your marketing approach – but it is your responsibility to understand and properly address this law and how it affects your business.

One very important distinction is how this law affects SoMe use :

CASL does not apply to promotional information you post online in places like blogs or social media.

Facebook – New Focus on Direct Response and FBX-Powered Ads

Posted by sdidcott on May 15, 2014

Until now Facebook has primarily focused their paid advertising on branding and story sponsored advertising.

But now they are moving into search and putting an emphasis on their Facebook Exchange. FBX is Facebook’s own real-time bidding exchange using Facebook user data and 3rd party DSP’s (Demand Side Platforms) which track user behaviour via cookies. FBX is then able to  generate hyper-targeted ads in the desktop, News Feed, and right-rail.

In search  direct response ads are designed to get customers to take an immediate action based on what they’ve already shown interest in.
For example: Let’s say you have surfed the web looking for high end hotel rooms in Miami; and then every time you open your browser or a new page (for the next week at least) you see ads for some of these hotels popping up on your screen…Voila! – this is direct response marketing.
Direct response advertising is based on cookies left on the websites you visit. FBX works with Facebook approved DSP (Demand Side Platforms) to target specific users when they are on Facebook.
Watch out Google AdWords !

Facebook- ‘Business Manager’ Tool for Marketers – finally !

Posted by sdidcott on April 28, 2014

Facebook has finally rolled out “Business Manager” for marketers to manage multiple campaigns at last !

They have been slowly rolling this tool out over the last month which that allows marketers and agencies to manage multiple campaigns via one interface; a client or agency can manage several facets of an account and control who gets access.

One advantage of “Business Manager” will be that people can use their Facebook Login to access ad accounts and Pages without having to be friends with other people to gain access.

Here is a recent study showing the impact of emotional content and user engagement.

It is pointed out that {“part of what makes emotional content so susceptible to spreading is that emotions themselves are contagious and positive emotions best negative ones, any emotion bests none at all.”}

Great News for Small businesses from Facebook Today !

Posted by sdidcott on October 23, 2013
Posted in: Uncategorized. Leave a comment

Here’s a huge bonus for all small businesses using FB to reach their best prospects and customers.

Custom Audience Feature is Now Available to All Advertisers

What does this mean?  Facebook now allows you to upload your own contact list to the main Ads dashboard and reach your own prospects and customers with targeted ads.

Using your own list of email subscribers from an email marketing channel via your website will allow a small business to target the HOT potential customers.

Privacy concerns have been covered in that  “Facebook encrypts (called “hashed”) each email address on your list so the emails are not actually usable and then your list is deleted once the match process is complete. Facebook does *not* suddenly start emailing (spamming!) your subscribers. And, for those people on your list that didn’t match with a Facebook account, Facebook doesn’t suddenly start sending invites to join Facebook.”(via Mari Smith )

Putting your time and energy towards engaing the best prospects and customers only makes sense.

Give us a call and Get started today!!

Facebook says: Today Custom Audiences will begin rolling out in all ad interfaces for a limited number of US advertisers. Global rollout will begin next week, with all advertisers worldwide having access by the end of November. (via Mari Smith)

Finally – Facebook lets you edit your posts!

Posted by sdidcott on September 26, 2013

Life is a little bit easier for the Facebook user  today !

At last FB is making a change to the way one can edit their posts once they have been published.

Great news to those of us who post something and then realize a few hours later or even the next day there is a typo or a mistake in dates and time etc., of an event being promoted.

Up until now the only recourse was to delete your post and start over … losing the likes and links to other users etc., …not the goal 😦

But now if you make a typo  you can go back and fix it easily enough and your original post will stay in the edit history for any one to check to ensure there is no confusion or tricks being played !

SoMe and CEOs: Thoughts from Sir Richard Branson – Virgin Atlantic

Posted by sdidcott on April 20, 2013

Who isn’t using Social Media in big companies…. and what are they waiting for?

In a post by Richard Branson on his LinkedIn account he outlines his views about CEOs using Social Media – he say that those who are not are missing the boat!

Based on IBM’s 2012 Global CEO Study Social Media will be the number 2 way to communicate with customers in years to come (Face-to-Face will be #1). Yet, there is an astonishing number of company leaders who do not currently have a Social Media presence. Whether you are a Small Business owner , an Independent Professional, or the CEO of a large corporation your Social Media platforms provide a way for you to connect with and engage your customers; to build TRUST and LOYALTY with your customer base and increase sales and performance.

How can anyone argue with this – the closer you are to your customers the easier it is to hear what they are saying; what they want and meet their needs …. the end result  being increased ROI.

This is a WIN -WIN situation.

It is impossible to always have the #1 Face-to-Face Interaction with your customer, therefore engaging  in the next best thing – #2 AWESOME* Social Media Communications – is a smart business strategy.

Seriously – What are you waiting for ?

Facebook Home – Phone!

Posted by sdidcott on April 4, 2013
Posted in: Facebook, mobile, Social Media, Technology. Tagged: android, facebook, Mark Zuckerburg, socialmedia, technology, TMPNowMedia. Leave a comment

Here’s the BIG NEWS Facebook announced today:

It is called “Facebook Home” ….not actually their own phone … (yet?)

It’s a social layer that you can add to your Android phone.

“You’re going to be able to turn your Android phone into a great social device,” Zuckerberg said at the unveiling. “Our phones today are designed around apps, not people. We want to flip that around.”

Android users who have the most recent Facebook app will see a  link asking them if they want to download Facebook Home. It downloads as a separate app and will be available April 12.

According to Zuckerberg, Facebook Home will be available only for certain specific phones at launch. A tablet version is expected to come at a later date. Facebook Home is optimized for the HTC One and One X, and the Samsung Galaxy S III, Galaxy S 4 and Note II,

HTC also unveiled  the HTC First phone with Facebook Home pre-loaded. Currently AT&T is the  launch partner for Home, and will carry the HTC First. It’ll be available April 12 for $99.99, in the US with a two-year contract.

We will have to wait and see what happens in the Canadian market.
